Paranoia City: Atomic Dreams & Cold War Nightmares - a Film by BJA Samuel

Paranoia City: Atomic Dreams & Cold War Nightmares
The atomic bomb didn't just change warfare. It changed the American imagination.
Paranoia City: Atomic Dreams & Cold War Nightmares is a 54-minute archival essay film exploring the Atomic Age through nuclear test footage, government civil defence films, Cold War propaganda, and 1950s science fiction cinema.
Beginning with the Trinity test and the dawn of nuclear warfare, the film traces how atomic power reshaped American culture, from post-war optimism and technological utopianism to fear of annihilation, UFO panics, giant monsters, and survivalist ideology.
Constructed entirely from archival footage, public information films, newsreels, and mid-century genre cinema, Paranoia City examines how historical catastrophe became cultural mythology — and how the possibility of nuclear destruction entered the American imagination, shaping its dreams, fears, fantasies, and visions of the future.
