My NOVELS
I write philosophical fiction exploring human experience, mortality, consciousness, meaning, and the relationship between imagination and reality. My novels embody a worldview in which human beings exist within an indifferent natural universe, yet continually construct meaning through perception, memory, imagination, and experience.
The writing uses surreal imagery, repetition, transformation, intense sensory detail, and recurring patterns to explore these concerns through the experience of the characters. Rather than treating philosophy as something separate from the story, the novels attempt to embody philosophical ideas through their worlds, structures, images, and language.
The novels form an ongoing body of work shaped by an interest in existentialism, the grotesque, the surreal, and the relationship between the physical world and consciousness. Imagination functions throughout the fiction as both a means of creating meaning and a force capable of transforming the world.
Father Lupine, a vicious dictator with a bizarre and ambiguous political doctrine, has cast a spell over the people of his country. Many dismiss him as a rabid lunatic, but to others he represents progress and stands as the figurehead of an empowering fantasy for the nation’s disenfranchised young men. As the country falls further under his spell, his “drummer boys” flood the streets, while a small band of refugees attempts to escape Father Lupine’s brutal regime, “The Brotherhood,” even as their homeland collapses around them.
Set in a fictional country, the novel follows a society’s descent down a dark path - one that may ultimately lead to its own destruction.
the noon of night Trilogy
Three novels set within the Noon of Night world, a world of violence, mortality and terrible beauty, where reality is simultaneously material and symbolic.
Human lives unfold against forests, rivers, fire, blood and decay, as grief, belief, desire and violence take on the scale of myth. The prose is incantatory and grotesque, collapsing the distinctions between the human and the animal, the sacred and the obscene, life and death, beauty and decomposition.
The universe offers no meaning, yet consciousness cannot exist without creating it. And the myths we create matter.
